At home, lunch consisted of a peanut butter and banana sandwich and a cold glass of milk. As she ate, CiCi thought about her visit to Tyler’s cabin. Serena’s talk of digging up information moved CiCi’s mind in a different direction. Should I? She thrummed her fingers on the countertop. I have to. I’ll never rest until I know for sure. After changing into jeans, a flannel shirt, and duck boots, she grabbed the camouflage jacket off the hook by the front door and headed to the car.

When the turnoff to Tyler’s cabin appeared, her nerves forced her to drive right on past. A half-mile down the road, she took a deep breath, made a U-turn, and tried again. As she pulled in front of the cabin, the scenery bathed in the soft afternoon light set her at ease. After surveying the surroundings, she sighed with relief that neither of Tyler’s contractors were on the premises. She walked around to the back of the house, wondering if she could see the opening to the trail she and Tyler had taken the day before. There it is. She noted the spot, then made her way across the expansive yard to the outbuilding.

With a gentle—okay, maybe not so gentle—nudge of her shoulder, the side door flew open. She batted the cobwebs away from her face as she entered. Dirt-smudged windows let in just enough light to see. It was a typical garage with an attached workshop. Mice scurried to find a hiding place as she walked across the dirty floor to the workbench. Tyler had all the tools necessary to build whatever he desired, and there wasn’t a doubt in her mind she would find what she needed. She lifted one of several shovels from a peg on the wall and grabbed a nearby pair of work gloves. They were a tad too big, but trespassers can’t be choosy. On a whim, she snagged the binoculars on the workbench before heading up the path through the trees.

The view from the pond was more beautiful than the day before. She zipped up her jacket to ward off the chilly breeze. Sitting on Jenna’s favorite red bench, she turned her focus to the buildings at the far edge of the Greenleaf Grower’s property, just beyond the fence line. There were several translucent commercial greenhouses and hothouses, and two structures possibly used for supplies and machinery. She sat in silence, reflecting, perhaps the same as her cousin might have done. A hawk flew overhead. Two ducks waddled down the path, but the geese were gone. A strong gust of wind blew across the pond and the shovel she had leaned against the bench toppled to the ground, reminding her she had a suspicion to put to rest. She dared not say it out loud, lest she sound crazy as a loon.

A quarter way around the pond, she stopped. Her breathing had quickened, and it wasn’t from the walk. What am I doing? Tyler admitted to digging up a small plot of ground to pour a concrete base for another bench.
